Memorial Day 2012

Grandma called it Decoration Day

And we went to the various cemeteries

To pause to remember the relatives now gone.

Flags for the veterans

And flowers for the rest

A memory shared from her past.

The picnic would follow

And the fun of seeing her children

And then their children.

Playing together and enjoying being free to remember

To start the day with tears

So it could end in laughter.

The soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen,

National and coast guards,

Police officers, firefighters, and more,

Served their country, gave everything they had and

Continue to inspire others to take up the banner

And we owe them.

Our gratitude

And our respect

In many instances, our lives.

We thank you

We treasure you

And we will not forget to honor you.

  1. My favorite lines: “To start the day with tears
So it could end in laughter.”
That thought applies on so many levels. Thanks for sharing this!
